| In her book, Finding a Career that Works for You, Wilma Fellman helps readers identify their interests before choosing a career. Fellman states that, in general, jobs fall into one of six interest clusters (or may be a blend of more than one). This tool, in addition to a few others from her book (Tools # 9002 and 9004), will help you think about your interests as you plan your career.
The following list represents a sampling of occupations listed in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), published by the U.S. Department of Labor. The DOT is a valuable resource for first-time and experienced job seekers who want a comprehensive description of job duties. Over 27,000 occupations are included. Jobs that are similar are grouped together and are classified by a nine-digit code. Read the list of occupations below and highlight the occupations that interest you. Don't worry if you don't really know what the occupation involves. After you have finished highlighting write down the occupations that interest you the most. If you find a job in the DOT that is of interest to you and you want more information about this job you can go to a library and refer to the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). This is the U.S. Government's premier career reference book on occupations and future job markets. It contains information on specific occupations. For each career, it describes work activities and environment, earnings, number of jobs and their locations, and types of education, training, and personal qualifications needed. You can start your career search RIGHT NOT, by looking up some of the job titles that attract your attention the most. Be sure to allow your eyes to "wander" when you are looking up job titles in the DOT or OOH, because you may find other options that are clustered around the specific one you are researching. This is the time to explore. |
