Study examines effects of stimulant medication in a summer treatment program on young children with ADHD.
Stimulant mediciaont has a long history of use in school-age children with ADHD and their are numerous studies attesting to its efficacy. However, the use of stimulants with young children has been less well studied. Those studies that have been done have demonstrated some beneficial effects on several areas of functioning.
Despite the fact that stimulant medication is not approved by the US FDA for children younger then six years, stimulants are widely used in young children and there has been an escalating rate of prescriptions for stimulant medication in this population (Zito et al., 2000).
A recent study by Chacko, A., et al (2005) examined the efficacy of stimulant medication in multiple domains of functioning in 36 youngsters age five to six years diagnosed with ADHD. These children were attending a summer treatment program and underwent a randomized clinical assessment of the effects of two doses of methylphenidate (0.3 mg/kg versus 0.6 mg/kg) and placebo on social behavior and academic performance. Methylphenidate had an effect on all four social behaviors and improved two of the three areas of academic functioning. Most of the effect was seen at relatively lower doses, and relatively little incremental benefit was gained for most children by increasing the dose beyond low to moderate levels. The authors concluded that stimulant medication is an effective treatment for young children diagnosed with ADHD. They also indicated that when combined with an intensive behavioral treatment program the effect may be a reduced need for and dosing of stimulant medication.
